Bacterial Infection in Stomach

Bacterial Infection in the Stomach? Save Your Gut Today!

A 2003 Bollywood film surprised me for once by revealing the presence of 206 bones in the human body! However, knowing now that we carry around a trillion bacteria inside has made me feel 😖! These are more than our human cells, which has led people to wonder if we are “more bacteria than human!”

But, not to worry! Not all are harmful 😃.

Gut & Unhealthy Gut

We often hear people say, “go as per your gut feeling!” But how does our gut feel – that’s the question!

Like mentioned earlier, not all bacteria are harmful. In similar terms, some gut bacteria are essential and play a crucial part in your health. For instance, they help in the digestion process, metabolism and enhance your immune system.

The gut is the body’s gastrointestinal tract that plays a complex role and ultimately supplies the much-needed nutrition to your body, thus keeping you alive. In a nutshell, it carries food from the mouth to the stomach, converts it into useful nutrients, and provides energy to the body while throwing the waste out of the body, and much more!

Whilst thanking the ‘good bacteria, there are definitely some ‘bad’ ones that lower the body’s immunity or lead to other conditions like diabetes, asthma, allergies, heart diseases, or neurological disorders related to depression and anxiety. Correspondingly, there’s another severe disease resulting from a bacteria that enters our gut and infects it.

Yes, I am talking about typhoid caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi. I know we’ve talked about it earlier, but no harm in getting into more details, being more aware, and becoming safer.

Bacteria Salmonella Paratyphi can cause paratyphoid fever, while Salmonella typhi leads to typhoid fever. The fever can go as high as 104°F with other symptoms, including headache, stomachache, weakness, loss of appetite, diarrhea or constipation, cough, and rashes. Extreme cases can also lead to internal bleeding and death.

Such harmful impacts are just due to contaminated food! Yes, typhoid or, for that matter, any bacterial infection in the stomach is primarily due to contaminated food or water. As per a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the parts of the world with poor sanitation are at the greatest risk. These include Asia (especially India :(, Pakistan, and Bangladesh), Africa, the Caribbean, Central, and South America, and the Middle East. In such places, contaminated water is often used to prepare various beverages and foods. On the consumption of the same, the gut gets infected thus leading to deadly diseases like typhoid. Not only the inhabitants but also the travelers to such areas are at high risk.

Since typhoid is a contagious disease, the infected person is likely to become the source of the spread of the illness. An infected person may use the same rooms or infect the food and other things with their infected hands and make others sick. Ultimately, poor sanitation conditions and unhygienic hands become the primary source of the infection!

Our aim, hence, in this case, should be to eliminate the causing germ on our hands itself, without allowing it to enter our mouth and eventually our body.

Hand Hygiene

  • Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly.
  • Avoid frequent touching of your mouth and face with your hands.
  • Sanitize your hands regularly with an effective and safe sanitizer.

However, if you fail to do so, especially while traveling, which we strongly recommend you must not, then please ensure.

Since now we all know that diseases like typhoid prevail more in the areas where handwashing and sanitizing are less frequent, let’s nip the evil in the bud (destroy the bacteria on the hands).

Spread love through your hands, not germs.
